     柑橘は空気の流れに敏感な作物です。小田原の丘陵地帯は箱根の山から吹き下ろす風、相模湾からの潮風に恵まれた環境に加え、土壌が豊かで酸味のある柑橘には抜群の環境です。しっかりした酸味と甘みのあるレモンライムを育てるために、葉や土の状態、温度と湿度、風を感じながら育てたのが湘南プライムレモンライムです。
     農家は自然環境を守り改善していくのも大切な役割だと石綿さんは考えています。知恵と経験を活かし、新しい農業の世界を拓くことも自分たちの仕事なのだと。

    人間同様、植物も免疫力が大事

     いまから40年近く前、慣行農法でみかんを作り、農協へ全量出荷していましたが、丹精込めて作ったみかんの中身ではなく外観だけを評価する仕組みに疑問を覚えました。当時は農薬中毒で亡くなるみかん農家も多く、消費者が捨てる皮のために命をかけてみかんを作るのはおかしくないかと思ったのが、有機を始める最初の曲がり角です。
     まず化学肥料をやめ、堆肥を発酵させる微生物農法でみかん作りを始めて5~6年、農薬の回数が半分になり、土が変われば害虫や病気も減ると実感しました。その頃、みかんが低迷したのを機に、日本に導入されたばかりのキウイを地域の若い人たちと一緒に栽培し始めました。最初から無農薬で、肥料は有機質のものを使っていましたが、キウイが枯れる「かいよう病」という病気が畑の一部に出ました。肥料のやり過ぎが原因と当時すでにわかっていたため、有機の堆肥をすぐにやめ、それからずっと無肥料栽培です。慣行から有機、自然農法へと頭も畑もうまく切り替えられました。
     無肥料栽培で10年くらい経ったときに、肥料が原因ならもう、かいよう病にかからないのではないかと考え、実験しました。思いきって、かいよう病にかかった枝を接ぎ木してみたのです。1年目は移らなかったので試しに3年続けて実験したところ、移りませんでした。人間の体と同じで、自分が健康なら周りに風邪を引いている人がいても移らない、免疫力は大事だと確信を持てました。

    果樹園の草生栽培を開発

     無肥料栽培は誰でもどこでもできる技術ではありません。同じキウイでも場所が変われば気候風土、地面が違います。いちばん大事なポイントは、その植物がその土地にあっているかどうかで、それを見抜くのに経験と技術と情報が必要になります。誰でも簡単にできると思うと、たいへんな失敗をしてしまいます。その関係が化学的に解明されれば普及が進みますが、未知の世界です。
     果樹園の下草に、ヘアリーベッチという豆科の牧草を生やしています。敷きワラ状に地を這って雑草を抑えてくれます。キウイが本来吸う養分を牧草が吸うのだから、牧草に肥料をやらなくてはいけないはずですが、土の中の多数の微生物たちが養分を作ってくれると、最近わかってきました。
     土が軟らかいことは自然農法の重要なポイントです。土の中に空気がたくさん含まれ、その空気を植物が吸って養分にします。微生物も酸素や窒素を利用して活発に活動するので、土が軟らかくなり、保温状態がいいのです。牧草も土地にあったものを作物によって選ばなくてはならず、一律にはいきません。自然農法は放任栽培ではなく、ほったらかしとは違います。試行錯誤しながら研究していかないといい結果を導けません。

    信念で続けた自然農法

     私はおばあちゃん子で、小さい頃から「大きくなったらうちを継いで農業をやっていく」と洗脳されて育ちました(笑)。当然のように行った農業高校には似た環境で育ってきた農家の長男ばかりが集まり、3年間ずっと一緒に地域の仲間と勉強した体験は、自分の人生に大きく影響しています。
     農薬全盛の時代に農薬を使わずに農業をやっていくには、半端な気持ちではできませんでした。周囲と同じことをやっていれば精神的なプレッシャーも苦労もなかったと思います。たとえば、除草剤を使えば15分か20分で終わる1枚の田んぼの雑草に1日も2日もかけ、田んぼを這って手で取っているのを見た地域の人は、「専業農家で忙しいくせに、あいつは何やっているんだ」と許せないわけです。自分の生き方や考え方に信念を持っていなかったら、周りのその目に負けてしまいます。でも、いまは違います。自然農法は環境によく、食べても安心だと周りの人が理解してくれています。昔はただの変わり者に過ぎませんでしたけれど。

    収量ではなく仲間を増やしたい

     肥料や農薬を使う慣行と、無農薬で有機質の肥料を使う有機、無肥料の自然農法の3種類のキウイをビンに入れて常温で保存する腐敗実験を始めて10年以上経ちます。自然農法のキウイは形が残って匂いもせず、カビも生えていません。慣行農法のキウイは2、3年で液体状になって形がなく、ひどい匂いがします。無農薬で有機肥料の有機農法のキウイも途中で腐り、匂いもします。栄養をたくさんとりすぎると成人病や糖尿病になってしまう人間の体と同じで、安全な食べ物でも食べ過ぎてはいけないことが実験でよくわかりました。
     農薬や肥料を使わない農法を農業高校の仲間や若い人に教えてあげたいという思いがあります。食べて安心、農薬で寝込まず、自分も安全です。完璧な無肥料栽培以上の農法は世の中にないと思います。地域の産業として、自然農法の仲間が増えていけば、自分が苦労してやってきた甲斐があります。そこには生きがいを感じます。

    Like humans, plants are also important for immunity

    Nearly forty years ago, I made mandarin by conventional farming and shipped it to the agricultural co-op, but I felt doubts about the mechanism to evaluate only the appearance, not the contents of the mandarin made carefully. At the time, there were many tangerine farmers who died of pesticide poisoning, and it was the first turn to start organic that they thought it would be fun to spend their lives on the skin for consumers to throw away.
    First of all, I stopped chemical fertilizers and started making oranges by the microbial farming method that ferments compost for 5 to 6 years. I realized that the number of pesticides would be halved and that if the soil changed, pests and diseases would be reduced. Around that time, on the occasion of a downturn in oranges, I began to cultivate kiwi, which had just been introduced in Japan, with young people in the region. From the beginning, they used no organic chemicals and organic fertilizers, but some of the fields had a disease called "Kikai disease" that causes kiwi to wither. Because we already knew at the time that the cause of over-fertilizing was at the time, we stopped organic composting right away, and we have always grown without fertilizer. The heads and fields have been successfully switched from practices to organic and natural farming methods.
    When it passed about 10 years in fertilizer-free cultivation, I thought that if it was caused by fertilizer, it might not cause scald disease, and experimented. I was thinking, I grafted the branches that got sick. I did not move in the first year, so when I experimented for three years in a row, I did not move. I was convinced that Immune power was important, as in the human body, if you were healthy you would not move even if there were people with colds around.

    Develop herbaceous cultivation in orchards

    Fertilizer-free cultivation is not a technology that anyone can do anywhere. If the location is different even in the same kiwi climate climate, the ground will be different. The most important point is whether or not the plant is in the area, which requires experience, technology and information to see it. If anyone thinks it can be done easily, it will make a great mistake. If the relationship is elucidated chemically, it will spread, but it is an unknown world.
    Under the grass of the orchard, we are making a beet of hairy vetch. It crawls on the ground like a laying straw and suppresses weeds. It is necessary to feed the grass with fertilizer, because the grass sucks the nutrients that the kiwis normally suck, but it has recently been found that many microbes in the soil produce nutrients.
    Soft soil is an important point of natural farming. A lot of air is contained in the soil, and the air is absorbed by plants and made into nutrients. Microorganisms are also active using oxygen and nitrogen, so the soil is softened and heat retention is good. The grass must be selected according to the crop, and it is not uniform. Natural farming is not self-cultivation, but it is different from wild boar. You can not lead to good results unless you research it through trial and error.

    Natural farming practices continued with conviction

    I am a grandmother and child and I was brain-washed and grew up from a young age, saying, "When I grow up, I will carry on farming and carry on farming" (laughs). As a matter of course, only the eldest sons of farmers who had grown up in a similar environment gathered at agricultural high schools, and the experience of studying together with the community members for three years has greatly influenced their lives.
    It was not possible for me to feel awkwardly to carry out agriculture without using pesticides during the era of pesticides. I think that there was no mental pressure or hardship if I did the same thing as the surroundings. For example, people in the area who saw that they took one or two days to a weed in one rice field that lasts in 15 or 20 minutes with a herbicide, and take the rice fields by hand, I can not forgive you if you are busy and what are you doing? If you do not have a conviction in your way of life or your way of thinking, you will lose the eyes around you. But now it is different. Natural farming is good for the environment, and people around me understand that it is safe to eat. I used to be just a stranger in the past.

    I want to increase the number of friends, not the yield

    It has been over 10 years since we started putting in place bottles of three types of kiwis, which use fertilizers and pesticides, organic pesticides and organic fertilizers, and organic farming without fertilizers, and stored at room temperature. Natural farming kiwi remains in shape, does not smell and does not grow mold. In the past few years, kiwis in the conventional method become liquid and have no shape and smell bad. Kiwi, which is organic and organic fertilizer-free, is rotten and smells along the way. Experiments have shown that safe food should not be eaten too much, just like the human body that leads to adult disease and diabetes if too much nutrition is taken.
    I have a desire to teach my fellow agricultural high schools and young people how to use farming without pesticides and fertilizers. It is safe to eat, do not go to bed with pesticides, and you are safe. I think that there is no farming method beyond perfect fertilizer-free cultivation in the world. As an industry in the area, if the number of natural farming associates increases, it is worthwhile that you have struggled. I feel worth living there.
