    桃はとてもデリケートな果物です。温度変化で味が変わるため、常温でお届けいたします。届きましたらまずダンボールの蓋を開けてください(ダンボールの蓋を締めたままだと、通気が悪いため痛みます)。桃は常温管理です。いい香りがしてきたら食べごろ。食べる1時間くらい前に冷蔵庫で冷やしてお召し上がりください。


     「有機JAS認証の桃だからっておいしいとは限らない」と生産者の三谷英明さんはいう。桃は収穫前に雨が多く降ると水分を吸ってしまい、実は水っぽくなり、売り物にならなくなるのは有機栽培も慣行栽培も同じこと。今年(2019年)も、収穫時期を迎えそろそろ収穫をという矢先の大雨。有機JASの加納岩白桃はほぼ全滅した。敵は天候だけではない。虫や病害虫、カラスや野鳥、さまざまな生き物が桃は大好物らしい。高温多湿の亜熱帯気候の日本では病虫害の被害を受けやすく、一般に栽培される桃には収穫までに20回以上の農薬が散布されるのが通常だ。低農薬にすることすら難しいのが桃栽培の現実なのだ。
     そんな中、エコファームMITANIの三谷幸子さんは夫の英明さんとともに、25年以上、有機・特別栽培で桃を育てることにチャレンジしている。手間を惜しまず愛情を降り注ぎ、平成19年に桃の有機JAS事業者に認定された。全滅する恐れと毎年戦いながら、「加納岩白桃、白鳳、清水白桃」の3品種を有機で栽培し続けている。

     病害虫の被害が受けやすく収穫ゼロの可能性がある桃の有機栽培をなぜ行うのか?防除の季節になると朝早くから噴霧器で農薬を撒くのが慣行栽培。その農薬には「ネオニコチノイド」という殺虫成分が使われている(欧州などでは使用禁止)。昔は水がきれいで細い糸トンボがたくさん飛んでいたというこの辺一帯も、防除していたときには全然見かけなかった。しかし、幸子さんが有機栽培にチャレンジし始めてからは徐々に虫も戻ってきているという。環境や生態系を整えながら桃を育てていくやり方を選択した三谷夫妻は、若い人に里山の良さをもっと知って欲しいし、薬をたくさん使わなくてすむ農業をしたいという、自分と同じような感覚の仲間が増えてほしいと願っている。

     さて、その白桃。水槽に沈む個体があるほど、密度が濃いのが特徴だ。味はその年の雨量や気候、1本の桃の木の中でも上や下、東西南北で多少変わるというが、果肉に雑味がなく、香り高く幸せな甘さと、とろりとした舌触りと喉ごしは、さすが岡山の清水白桃。三谷さんご夫妻は自分たちの桃に対してはとても謙虚だ。しかし栽培困難な有機JASの桃を、環境や食べる人のことを考えて栽培し続けていることは並大抵のことではない。この桃を食べることがエコファームMITANIを応援する1票になり、倉敷の桃の新たな価値創造につながれば嬉しい。

    有機栽培の桃という険しい高みへ

     夏の収穫のときだけ一カ月ほど休みをとって両親の農作業を手伝っていたのですが、私が27歳のときに父が脳梗塞になり、一生懸命育てていた桃の木を切ろうかということになりました。それは忍びなくて、私に桃農家が務まるかわかりませんでしたが、始めたら意外に性に合っていたようです。
     当時は当然、慣行栽培で除草剤をまき、父は1週間に1回ほど防除をしていたと思います。18キロぐらいのタンクを背負って一圃場で4〜5回、除草剤をまくと、若くても腰や背中が痛くて、4反歩もするのが苦痛でなりませんでした。普及所の指導員の先生から草生栽培をやってみないかと声をかけられたときに、草刈りも大変そうだと思いながらも、草生栽培を選びました。その後、化学薬品は使用せず、JASで使用が認められた一部の資材のみで栽培に取り組みましたが、その年は虫が来るし菌が来るし苦情は来るし、ひどかったですね。収穫もゼロでした。最初の年が最悪なだけで次第にどうにかなると思い、いまに至っています。
     有機栽培の圃場は2カ所ですが、全滅して収穫できないこともあります。有機だけでは食べていけないので、全圃場約2ヘクタールのうち、30アールを有機にして、特別栽培の桃も育てています。

    信頼に応えるために最善を尽くす

     有機栽培を始めた当初、桃の木の切り口に塗布剤を塗らなくてはいけないと思い込み、ベンガラやチタンを試しましたが、切り口近くがぷっと膨れ、木がいやがります。何をやってもだめで、「かすり傷程度は舐めたら治る」と昔言われたようにほったらかしてみて、何もしなくていいとわかりました。有機の古い圃場の方は20年経ち、棲む虫の種類が変化して、アブラムシが来ることはほとんどありません。土や木が自力で防御しているようです。
     有機栽培で作られた清水白桃は繊維質がきめ細やかで口どけがよく、ずっしりと重量があり、同じ大きさの桃より早く水に沈みます。また、害虫を寄せ付けないよう、表面がけば立っています。
     雨が多いと水太りして味が落ちます。雨続きだった最初の年、廃棄を覚悟してお断りの電話をお客さんにかけたときに、「そういう年もあるよ。出荷して」と言っていただけたことが忘れられません。実は私、桃が嫌いで普段は食べませんが、雨が続く年は収穫のタイミングを見つけるために、たくさん食べます。励まし、信用してくださったお客さんを想えばできます。桃は安いものではないので、買った方を絶対にがっかりさせたくありません。贈り手の気持ちが台無しになりますし、贈られた側をぬか喜びさせるのはいやなんです。

    仲間を増やし、全圃場をいずれ有機に

     桃を育てて収穫し、食べたお客さんが喜んで、「おいしかったよ」「ありがとう」と声をかけてくれたりすると、最高に「嬉しい!」という気持ちになり、がんばろうという意欲が湧いてきます。
     自分で食べるなら梨が好きです。この辺りは「愛宕梨」という赤ちゃんの頭ぐらい大きな梨が作られていて、私も近所のおばあちゃんから畑を預かって4年目です。梨は桃以上に防除する果樹です。「梨を食べたいな」と農薬アレルギーの知人がぽろっと言ったのが気になり、試しに1本だけ農薬を使わずに栽培しています。順調に育って10月に無事に収穫でき、喜ばせられたら嬉しいですね。
     私もだんだん年をとってきているので、若い人に有機の桃の圃場を引き継ぎたいと思っています。この辺一帯は水がきれいで、昔は細い糸トンボがたくさん飛んでいました。防除していたときには全然見かけなかった虫も戻ってきています。若い人に里山の良さをもっと知ってもらいたいし、薬をたくさん使わなくてすむ農業をしたいという、自分と同じような感覚の仲間が増えてほしいと願っています。5年後ぐらいに自分の全圃場を有機栽培にしたいというのも目標のひとつです。

    夫婦一緒に働く至福の時間

     「失敗したら梅干しを見ながらごはん食べて、ちょっと儲けが出たら梅干しかじりながらごはん食べればいいか」という行き当たりばったりの性格なので、主人から「お前は考えない」と言われます。でも、細かく計算して先まで考えすぎていたら、ここまで続けてこられなかったかもしれません。
     定年退職した主人と一緒に農業をやれる時間が増えて、すごく嬉しいんです。主人はとても研究熱心で、作業も判断も的確にしてくれます。一人で思い悩んでいたことにも意見がもらえます。主人が仕事をしていたときは、「朝出て行ったら夜まで帰らないなんていやだな」と思っていました。いまも週に一度は会社に行くので「まだ行くんかなぁ」という気持ちになります(笑)。
     病気でも虫でも天候でも、毎年いろいろと問題があります。ずっと順調だったのに収穫直前に台風が直撃する年もあるし、完全勝利することはなくて、いつも「負けた」感があるんです。来年は絶対勝ってやる! そう思うと、やめられません。

    "The organic JAS certified peach is not necessarily delicious," said producer Hideaki Mitani. Peach absorbs moisture when it rains a lot before harvesting, and it actually becomes watery and is not sold for organic and conventional cultivation. This year (2019), too, is the time of harvest and the heavy rain at the end of the harvest season. Organic JAS's Kanoiwa white peach has almost been destroyed. The enemy is not only the weather. Insects and pests, crows and wild birds, and various living things, peach is a favorite food. In hot and humid subtropical climates in Japan, it is easily affected by pests and diseases, and generally grown peaches are usually sprayed with more than 20 pesticides before harvest. It is the reality of peach cultivation that even low pesticides are difficult.
    Under such circumstances, Yukiko Mitani of eco-farm MITANI has been challenging to grow peaches in organic and special cultivation for more than 25 years with her husband, Hideaki. It was decided to take charge of love without much trouble and was certified as a peach organic JAS company in 2007. We are continuously growing organically three varieties of "Kanaiwa white peach, Hakuhou, Shimizu white peach" while fighting for fear of annihilation every year.

    Why are you going to organically cultivate peaches that are susceptible to pests and have a potential of zero harvest? It is customary to spray pesticides with a sprayer early in the morning when it is the season of control. An insecticidal component called "neonicotinoid" is used as the pesticide (the use is prohibited in Europe etc.). In the past, this area where the water was clean and thin thread dragonflies flew a lot was not seen at all when I was controlling it. However, it is said that insects have gradually returned since Yukiko started challenging organic farming. Mitani and his wife, who chose to grow peaches while preparing the environment and ecosystem, want young people to know more about the goodness of satoyama and want to do farming that does not use much medicine, similar to their own. I hope that the number of friends in the senses will increase.

    Well, that white peach. The characteristic is that the more individuals sink in the aquarium, the higher the density. The taste varies slightly between the rainfall and climate of the year, the top and bottom of a peach tree, and the north, south, east and west, but the flesh has no savory taste, fragrant and happy sweetness, thick taste and throat As expected, it is Shimizu Hakuto of Okayama. Mrs. and Mrs. Mitani are very humble about their peaches. However, it is not unusual to keep growing organic JAS peaches, which are difficult to grow, considering the environment and the people who eat them. Eating this peach will be one vote to support the Eco Farm MITANI, and I hope that Kurashiki's peach will create new value.


    Interview with Yukiko Mitani

    To the height of the organically grown peach

      I was taking a break for about a month only during summer harvest and helping my parents' farming work, but if I was 27 years old my father had a cerebral infarction and would you like to cut the peach tree you were growing hard Thats how its going to be. It didn't make it to me and I didn't know if it would be a peach farmer, but it seemed that it was surprisingly fit when I started.
     At that time, of course, we think that we apply herbicide in conventional cultivation and my father controls about once a week. I carried a tank of about 18 kg and packed the herbicide four to five times in one place, and it was sore at the waist and back widely, and it was not painful to do the four opposites. When I was told that I would not try to cultivate grass from the instructor of the spread center, it was hard to cut the grass. After that, I did not use any chemicals, but only some of the materials approved for use by JAS. I took it into cultivation, but in the year there were insects coming and going, complaints came and it was awful. The harvest was also zero. I think that the first year is the worst and I think it will eventually get better.
    There are two organically grown fields, but there are cases where they can not be harvested because they are destroyed. Since organic food alone can not be eaten, we are making 30 are organic out of about 2 hectares of the whole field and also cultivate specially grown peaches.

    Do my best to meet trust

     At the beginning of organic farming, I thought that I had to apply a coating to the cut end of the peach tree, I tried bengara and titanium, but the cut near the end was popped up and the wood was disgusting. No matter what you do, when you let go of what you said in the old days, "If you get rid of scuffs healed," I realized that I should do nothing. It has been 20 years for the old organic fields, and the type of insects they have changed has changed so that aphids rarely come. It seems that soil and trees defend themselves.
    Shimizu white peach made by organic cultivation has fine fiber, crispy mouth, heavy weight, and sinks in water faster than peach of the same size. In addition, the surface stands up to keep pests away.
    If it rains a lot, it will lose weight and lose its taste. In the first year of the rain, I prepared for disposal and when I asked the customer for a refusal phone, I can not forget that he said "There is such a year. In fact, I hate peach and don't usually eat it, but during the rainy year I eat a lot to find the timing of harvest. I can do it by thinking of the customers who have encouraged and trusted me. Momo is not cheap, so I definitely do not want to disappoint those who bought it. The feeling of the presenter is ruined, and it is a shame to let the gifted side be delighted.

    Increase friends and make all fields organic

    When the customers who ate and harvested the peach were happy and at the same time they said, "It was delicious," and "Thank you," they would be extremely happy and be motivated to do their best. .
    I like pears if I eat it myself. The area around here is a pear that is about the size of a baby's head called "Ehime Pear", and I've been in the field for four years from my grandma in my neighborhood. Pears are fruit trees that control over peaches. "I want to eat a pear," I was worried that the acquaintance of pesticides and allergy said porrot, I'm growing without using pesticides for trial only. It is nice to grow well and to be harvested safely in October and to be pleased.
    As I am getting older, I want to take over the organic peach farm to young people. The area around this area is clean, and in the old days a lot of thin thread dragonflies flew. Some insects that I did not see at all when I was controlling are coming back. I want young people to know more about the goodness of Satoyama, and I want them to increase the number of people who have the same feeling as myself and want to do farming without using a lot of medicine. One of the goals is to have your whole field grow organically in about five years.

    Time of bliss to work together

    The owner says, "If you fail, you should eat rice while watching umeboshi, and if you get a little bit of plump, you should eat rice while plumbing." However, if you calculate too carefully and think too much, you may not have been able to continue here.
    I am very happy to be able to work more with my retiring master. My husband is a research enthusiast and he makes both work and judgment properly. You can also get an opinion that you were bothered alone. When my husband was working, I thought, "If I go out in the morning, I will not go back to the night." I still go to work once a week, so I feel like I'm still going (laughs).
    Diseases, insects and weather have many problems every year. There was a year when the typhoon hit directly before the harvest even though it was all the time well, and there is always no feeling of winning completely, and there is always a feeling of losing. I will definitely win next year! If I think so, I can not stop.
