  • 人と人、農村と都市、生産と消費を繋げたい


    栽培の気候条件が厳しいレモン

     瀬戸内が日本一のレモンの産地なのは気候条件が適しているからです。日本で有数の日照時間を誇る温暖な気候で、降水量が少なく、雪もほぼ積もりません。レモンは他の柑橘に比べて寒さに弱く、気温マイナス3度が3時間以上続くと枝の先から枯死していきます。枝にトゲもあるのでキズになりやすく、比較的栽培難度の高い柑橘です。
    僕のレモンは、露地の有機栽培のなかではトップクラスのきれいさだといってもらえるんですが、殺虫剤をずっと撒いていないので、生態系のバランスが整っているからだと思います。殺虫剤を撒けば良い虫も悪い虫も殺し、薬に強い虫が生き残り、さらに強い殺虫剤を撒かなければならなくなり、悪循環を招きます。除草剤を撒いた畑には虫がいないから、イノシシは一切入りません。ここはセミの幼虫やミミズなど、いろんな生き物がいる。それらを食べるためにイノシシが土を掘り返し、耕してくれます。柔らかい土は微生物や虫、動物によって作られています。
     僕の家は代々の農家ではありません。親父はトラックの運転手で、この島のみかんを運送していました。無農薬や無添加の食材を販売している関西の方から有機栽培の農産物を求められ、親父は大胆なタイプでしたから、自分で取り組むことにしたそうです。放任園なども預かってきたので、生口島と高根島の条件のいい所から悪い所まで散り散りに畑があります。

    生まれ育った島で仕事がしたい

     僕が小学校低学年ぐらいのときですから、親父は30代後半ぐらいでしょうか。有機JASに準拠した天然由来の農薬や肥料のみで柑橘全般を栽培し始めました。素人だったから逆にできたのかもしれません。普通栽培の農家が有機に変わるのは、柑橘王国の島では滅多にない話です。農薬を減らした方がいいとわかっていても、きれいなものを作らないといい値段がもらえないから、家の周りのみかんだけ無農薬という普通栽培の人もいます。
    他の農家の子どもたちは冬休みにみかん収穫を手伝うとお駄賃をもらえるのに、うちはもらえなかったので、嫌で仕方がなかったですね。大人になったら絶対農家にならないと思っていました。スーツを着て毎月給料をもらう普通のサラリーマンに憧れたんです。でも、大学生の頃に都会で一人暮らしをして思ったのは、自分が生まれ育った所は水も環境もやっぱり肌に合うということです。
     新人営業マンだった社会人2年目に親父と飲んで、「不便だけど理屈抜きでこの島が好きだから、40歳ぐらいになったら戻って仕事したい」と話したら、親父が農家になるきっかけを作った人にすぐ電話してしまい、その会社で勉強させてもらうことになり、2日後には退職願いを出しました。

    おいしいかどうかは天候次第

     有機・無農薬農産物、無添加食品の配達会社で8年ほど働いていたときに、親父の作ったものをお客さんに届けて喜ばれると、親父のやってることってすごかったんだなと感じるようになりました。普通栽培との違いや添加物の何が悪いのかを勉強すればするほどコンビニ弁当を食べることが減り、たまに食べるとお腹をくだして体調が悪くなる。人間の体は食べたものでできているんだなと改めて感じました。
    みかんは個性もあるし、やれることはとことん一生懸命やっているけど、結局は味も天候次第。お客さんと直接話して作り手の思いを理解してもらい、対等に意見を言い合える関係を築き上げたいですね。人と人、農村と都市、生産と消費がちゃんと繋がることがすごく大事だと思います。お客さんと繋がって柑橘栽培をして、この島で生きていくことが僕の仕事というか、生きがいです。
    メールの問い合わせには電話で対応します。最初は嫌がられますが、友達・親友関係になって正直に向き合いたい。産地偽装などの食品の事件は物と金のやり取りで儲けを重視し、生産と消費が遠すぎるほど起こる気がします。1歳の自分の子が触っても食べても大丈夫なものを一生懸命作るだけでいい。電話は効率が悪いけど、楽しいです。

There are no insects in the field where the herbicide is sown, so no wild boars enter. Here, there are various creatures such as cicada larvae and earthworms. The wild boar digs and plows them to eat them. Soft soil is made by microorganisms, insects and animals.
    My house is not a generation of farmers. My father was a truck driver and carried oranges on the island. The father of Kansai, who sells non-pesticide-free and additive-free ingredients, requested organically grown agricultural products, and his father was a bold type, so he decided to work on his own. As we have also been entrusted with the Hojoen, there are fields scattered around Ikuchijima and Takanejima from good to bad conditions.

    I want to work on the island where I was born and raised

    When I was in the lower grades of elementary school, would my father be in his late 30s? We have begun cultivating citrus in general with only pesticides and fertilizers derived from nature that comply with organic JAS. It might be possible to do the opposite because he was an amateur. It is rare for ordinary farmers to turn organic on citrus islands. Even if you know that it is better to reduce pesticides, you will not get a good price unless you make beautiful ones.
    Children from other farmers could get paid for helping to pick oranges during the winter vacation, but they couldn't. I thought I would never become a farmer when I grew up. I was longing for a regular salaryman in a suit and getting paid every month. However, when I was a college student, I lived in the city alone and thought that where I was born and raised, both water and the environment fit my skin.
    After drinking with my father in the second year of a business person who was a new salesman, he said, "I like this island without any reason, but I want to go back and work when I am about 40 years old." I immediately called the creator and had to study at the company, and two days later I requested a retirement.

    Depends on the weather

    When I was working for about eight years at a delivery company of organic and pesticide-free agricultural products and additive-free foods, I was so glad to deliver my father's products to customers and I felt that my father's work was amazing. It is now The more you learn about the differences from normal cultivation and what is wrong with the additives, the less you eat convenience store lunches. If you eat them occasionally, you will get hungry and get sick. I once again felt that the human body was made of food.
    Mandarin oranges have a personality and they do everything they can to do it, but after all the taste depends on the weather. I would like to talk directly with customers to understand the creator's wishes and build a relationship where they can share their opinions on an equal basis. I think it is very important that people and people, rural and urban, production and consumption are connected properly. It's my job to connect with customers, grow citrus fruits, and live on this island.
    E-mail inquiries are handled by telephone. I hate it at first, but I want to be a friend / best friend and face honestly. Food incidents such as spoofing of production areas place importance on making money by exchanging goods and money, and I feel that production and consumption will occur too far. All you have to do is make something that your one-year-old child can touch or eat. Phones are inefficient but fun.

    Aiming for a company where anyone can work

    His father started in one town and now has three towns. Returning eight years ago, he has planted and selected different varieties of lemons and cultivated Lisbon varieties native to Portugal on the island and Berna varieties native to Spain, which few lemon farmers know. Berna, who wasn't good at the age of 5th and 6th grade saplings, was delicious when he ate with Patissier who happened to visit the following year. Though I thought it was a failure, the taste changed as I became mature. I feel strong in the cold.
    There was a person close to me who helped the vulnerable and did not boast about anything else. I was shocked in my late 20s and was ashamed of my self-centeredness. That person's belief that they are the same person after all is my underlying value. I want to make citrus as a destiny community with a hard worker and live together. Last year, we incorporated the company to improve social insurance and welfare programs so that people could work with peace of mind. There is no perfect person, it is natural. It is important to know human beings.
    I would like to increase the key industries of oranges, lemons, blood oranges, and bergamot oranges so that I can be a little more secure. As production increases, so does the number of people you can hire. We want to be a company that can share the pain of people and work for everyone. I find it challenging to be a company that can reach those in need.

居酒屋さんもバーテンダーもパティシエもジャム屋さんもお茶屋さんも、能勢さんの畑を見にやってくる。イノシシが耕した大地に草が生え、レモンが木になり、病害虫にあった実や美しいものがサイズも大小混在する状態を見て初めて、一定サイズ以上のものだけ探して収穫する手間や、枝にトゲがあって擦りキズや病気になることなどを理解してもらう。
葉っぱをちぎったバーテンダーが、「レモンモヒートにできる!」と気づいたり、「ベルガモットオイルを作れる」と発想するシェフがいたり。「多様性を発揮していただくためにもプロのお客さん自身に加工してもらいます」と能勢さん。「レモンは見た目勝負で酸っぱければいいから、魚ぼかし肥料をやる必要はないと笑われたんですけど、プロの料理人には、味に奥行きがあると言ってもらえます。安全なものを求める方は、見た目が悪くてもちゃんと買ってくれます。それに甘んじたらいけないので、もっとええもんつくっちゃろうと思いますね」
